In this realistic family drama set in Reykjavik, Peter, a professional in his late thirties, accidentally learns through routine blood work that his nine-year-old son, Orn, is not his biological child. Peter withdraws into himself, dragging everyone close to him into a kind of emotional abyss.

Director Ásgeirsson, in his feature film debut, stages a drama most of whose action is interior. We first see Peter as a giving person, who rushes his son to the hospital when he collapses during a soccer match, and who plans to take his pregnant wife, Asta, on a vacation to the Caribbean and throws her a birthday party. Now he withholds everything. His sense of identity shattered, he has become watchful and wary. Pushed outside his own life, he now stands aloof from it, unwilling to reenter but unable to walk away irrevocably.

The result is an uncannily truthful examination of the male ego. The superlative cast is called upon to perform naturalistically through gesture, look, stance, as they play educated, middleclass people whom a crisis has rendered as inarticulate as cavedwellers.
