The films presented at this festival offer the widest
possible variety of sensibilities and approaches. But only one can boast
a supporting cast that includes Elisha Cook, Jr., William Holden and
former President Ronald Reagan. That film is Dale Kutzera's zany, dead-on
parody Military Intelligence and You!
Kutzera's film brazenly inserts actual footage from
US Army training films and WWII-era propaganda movies into this send-up
of...US Army training films and WWII-era propaganda movies. The end
result allows the great, aforementioned character actors (and Ronald
Reagan) to interact with contemporary performers Patrick Muldoon (as
stalwart Army Intelligence officer Nick Reed), Elizabeth Bennett (as
Reed's former flame, Lt. Monica Tasty) and Mackenzie Astin (as Lt. Tasty's
current fella, Maj. Mitch Dunning). Thanks to Mark Parry's ace, black
'n' white photography (complete with scratches and speckles) the contemporary
scenes blend with the found stock seamlessly, adding to the dizzying
effect. The end result is frothy concoction that mixes ZAZ-style hilarity
with biting, Strangelove-ian satire.
Tremble as the threat level rises from tangerine to
orange! Thrill as hero proclaims, “This is a big...fat...WORLD
WAR!!” Scratch your head as actors appear to be reading off-screen
cue cards. It's all in the name of everyone's favorite oxymoron: Military
Intelligence. - Jonathan Knipp
