You both bring up a good point about the need for more community cohesion: we need to show up AND we need the opportunity to talk afterward.

This is part of the thinking behind adding Roving Cinema and other events - they are meant to be social film experiences. Of course, this programming is new for us, so we're still learning and shaping our year round events.

First of all, we don't need "less multiplex". That's not the issue for us, let their managers and CFOs care about it. What we need is, yes, more arthouses. Maybe not even more, just a place that runs good movies once a week at a convenient time, and, most importantly, gathers mostly the same people all the time, so awkward weird movie lovers talk about films afterwards. That's when a film movement goes public. It needs to be fed all the time and the film festival is not enough. What you think?

To answer "what does it need more of:" Us and everyone we know. In all seriousness. We need to show up. We need to bring our friends. We need to think of everyone we know who might like a particular movie, then we need to call them and encourage them to go. When we get there, we need to ask to speak to the manager or programmer, tell them how much we appreciate foreign/indie/classic films being shown, and then ask if they're going to show [fill in the blank title] which is currently playing in NY, LA, Chicago, Minneapolis (seriously- the Landmark theater in Minneapolis is to die for), DC etc etc.

As far as what I want to see: 1) Contemporary foreign films by significant filmmakers anywhere. 2) More arthouse, less multiplex at the Keystone Art Cinema. 3) Regular, not occasional film programming at the Toby.
