Synopsis:
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Desire offers a poignant perspective
on the complicated dynamics of race and class in New Orleans. Over the
course of five years, five diverse young women – two from the
Ninth Ward’s Desire Housing Project, a young single mother, and
two girls’ from one of New Orleans’ most prestigious private
schools – to capture the intimate dramas that surrounded their
lives. Weaving them together into a larger narrative, Gustafson creates
a portrait of young women who survive a variety of personal circumstances
and family battles, all before they had to survive the worst storm in
American history. A record of life in New Orleans before the tragedy,
Desire puts human faces on the issues the city faced and faces as it
attempts to rebuild itself.
