Blackout is a subtle, unique thriller
in that the “enemy” our protagonist must face is himself.
Gil, an apartment landlord, suffers from frequent
blackouts due to his heavy drinking. His alcoholism has spiraled so
far out of control that his wife has left him, and their son, Nino,
behind.
In his despair, Gil pledges to quit drinking and reunite his family.
But before he can make good on his pledge, Gil suffers another blackout,
and this one comes with a mysterious and disturbing souvenir –
a blood-spattered bumper.
Deft editing, skillful pacing, and powerful acting (especially
Padilla) put us inside Gil’s mind, giving us a perspective similar
to that of Gil’s spotty memory. But it’s the keen ability
to switch between reality and illusion that establishes Blackout
as a unique thriller – one that arises from small corner of everyday
Pilipino life. With his second film, Bautista has carved a niche for
himself on the world cinema stage. His is a name to look for in the
future. - Wm. Brian Owens
